John Close opened the chamber of commerce’s new Green Business category by winning a Black Tie Award for Lush EcoLawns Friday at Travelodge Duncan.

The packed gala event, hosted by the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce and emceed by SunFm staff, saw coveted Black Ties presented in six categories containing publicly nominated hopefuls.

Close faced off against three nominees as did winners in most award slots.

The Customer Service Black Tie went to Will Taylor of BowMel Chrysler. He was among four nominees. Angela Etherington of Progressive Fitness Personal Training earned the Home-Based Business Black Tie. Business Achiever honours were uncorked by Ingrid Lehwald and Frédéric Desbiens of Saison Market Vineyards. Their category boasted five nominated firms.

Cortnie Clarke of Crave Boutique bagged the Young Entrepreneur Black Tie, while George Treit of Providence Farm landed the Volunteer Black Tie.

The chamber recently announced Duncan’s late timber baron, Herb Doman of Doman Industries, as its Business Achiever Black Tie winner. Doman’s daughter, Darcia, accepted the award on her dad’s behalf Saturday.

Proceeds from the annual black Tie affair will assist building the chamber’s new Visitor Centre slated for the B.C. Forest Discovery Centre across from the Cowichan Commons mall.
