Mill Bay welcomes New York's finest
One of New York’s finest is coming to south Cowichan.
Elite jazz pianist Misha Piatigorsky brings his trio to Mill Bay, Nov. 9.
The winner of the 2004 Thelonious Monk Composers Competition, Piatigorsky is described in his promotional material as “an innovative musician whose powerful melodies and harmonic sensitivity give his sound a deeply personal yet cosmopolitan dimension, reflecting his experience as a Russian-Jewish émigré growing up in urban America – beautifully merging the worlds of serious jazz and pop.”
He has toured the world and collaborated with musicians including Mark Murphy, Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker and John Faddis.
Piatigorsky’s technique, charisma and electric energy have been described in the Jazz Review as combining “the chalice of modernism with the stew-pot of soul.”
“Sketchy Black Dog is his current obsession – cranking out his original arrangements of Classic Rock tunes alongside his own award-winning compositions.”
Piatigorsky will be here with Victoria-born, Toronto-based bassist Neil Swainson and Los Angeles drummer Chris Wabich.
The music starts at Mill Bay’s Sylvan United Church (985 Shawnigan Mill Bay Rd) at 7: 30 p.m. Advance tickets are $15. Call 250-743-4301 to reserve.
