Celebrate Cowichan's champions for children on Saturday

Cowichan’s champions for children will be celebrated Saturday in a new take on the annual event.

The annual Champion for Children Awards of Excellence gala banquet and awards is expanding to include an evening-closing concert this year.

But the main event, of course, is the naming of this year’s Champions for Children.

Finalists are:

Aboriginal Champions — Patsy Brown, Lise Haddock, Mel Jack Sr.

Business Champions — Cherry Tree Child Care, Dinter’s Nursery, La Ronde Child Care, Tweedlebugs Child Care.

Group/Organization Champions — Le’Lum’uylh Child Care, maternity staff at Cowichan District Hospital, Shawnigan Lake Community Centre.

Individual Champions — Becky Bennett, Shelly Sorensen, Rhoda Taylor, Dr. Maggie Watts.

There were also close to 60 individuals and businesses that were nominated as outstanding community champions for children.

The event begins with a banquet, continues with the presentation of awards, and concludes with performances from the Cowichan Youth Choir, Kathy White Dancers, Dustin’s Drum Line, Lindsay Elzinga, Abby Lise, Giuliani Mansueti, and Nate Boewman.
