Cowichan's 11th roundabout now open
North Cowichan’s new roundabout at the Drinkwater-Somenos corner opened for vehicular business Friday.
The $430,000 circle — funded by local taxpayers and ICBC — controls traffic at the site of a tragedy in recent years.
It also helps police traffic headed along Drinkwater Road to the busy Cowichan Commons mall, and along Somenos Road to the new municipal ball fields there.
The roundabout’s opening ended weeks of motorists avoiding the construction site.
Building did not affect the nearby landmark Mountainview Cemetery grounds.
The new roundabout is the municipality’s 11th since 2005. Future roundabouts planned include River Road at Chemainus Road, and possibly Lane Road at Drinkwater, staff said.
