Lefebure edges Walker by 22 votes in North Cowichan mayoral race

Former North Cowichan mayor Jon Lefebure is mayor again.

The Chemainiac edged incumbent mayor Tom Walker by just 22 votes in a 2,340-2,318 nailbiter during Saturday’s election.

Lefebure’s three-year council will hold newcomer councillors Kate Marsh (554 votes), and poll-topper Jennifer Woike (766), plus former councillor Barb Lines (627).

Returning incumbents are Ruth Hartmann (640 votes), John Koury (619), and Al Siebring (595).

“I feel pretty good,” said Lefebure, who helmed the municipality between 2002 and 2008 before being beaten by Walker.

Lefebure chalked his narrow win to a team effort of door knocking and phone calling.

He wasn’t exactly sure what gave him the edge against Walker.

“One of our goals was to see more women elected to council, and I think the results clearly show people agreed with us.”
