Kindness strikes a cord for Miller Road resident
Acts of kindness are wonderful at any time of the year, but especially during the Christmas season.
An emotional Val Phelps greeted four good Samaritans at her Miller Road home Wednesday morning. They were there as part of the Island Savings Credit Union's Waves of Kindness program.
"What we do from time to time, we'll just show up and do some Wave of Kindness,'' said Felice Iorio, one of the crew that included Shaun Mann, Jamie Pakos and Wes Lancaster.
"I just had this huge tree taken down in my front yard,'' explained Phelps. "When I came back from town (Tuesday), I realized there was some wood missing.
"I was pretty emotional. It cost me a lot of money to have it taken down and it was my firewood for the next couple of years.''
Phelps called her insurance agent to report quite a few of the pieces cut into 16-inch lengths were gone and to see about a claim.
"I wasn't even thinking with my deductible, it wouldn't be worth an insurance claim,'' said Phelps.
She then reported the incident to police.
"One of the gals across the street has also had some wood go missing,'' said Phelps. "I was upset. I feel violated as well.''
Phelps' sons don't live nearby, but they planned to do the clean-up. She couldn't do much about it herself due to health issues.
"They were going to split it and stack it when they came down for Christmas,'' said Phelps. "I knew help was coming, but it was too far away.''
"The wood is just too big and I just can't move it,'' she said.
Island Savings insurance offered to lend a hand, with three guys from the Cowichan Commons office and Lancaster from the Duncan centre to take care of things for Phelps.
"There's so many bad things in the news,'' said Phelps. "I don't know how else to thank these guys. It's so good of these guys to help someone out they don't even know.''
Act of Kindness are popping up everywhere.
"We'll show up at someone's grocery till and take their groceries to their car, things like that — anything to do with kindness,'' said Iorio.
