Galaxy gone, Island Tractor buys site with eye to building new facility
The landmark Galaxy Nightclub will be replaced by a new Island Tractor & Supply building.
But general manager Gord Fraser explained that new facility could take "a couple of years."
"We're going nowhere in the near future," he said Wednesday from Island Tractor's long-time Sprott Road site off the Trans-Canada Highway, opposite North Cowichan's municipal hall.
The new four-acre site sits off Cowichan Station's Bench Road, where the Galaxy — now demolished, after being bought from David Chang — stood for decades.
The Area E property needs regional rezoning to light-industrial use from the current commercial zoning.
The rezoning will allow repair of agricultural gear, Fraser explained.
His company, employing 15 locally, bought the Galaxy site to expand, and escape its current sloping site, he indicated.
The new building's design and square footage has not been determined, Fraser added.
Island Tractor is a full-service agricultural, commercial and light-industrial equipment dealer to landscapers, contractors, homeowners, and farmers.
It sells and services Kubota, New Holland, Wallenstein, Fella, AerWay and JayLor equipment brands, while offering used and consignment gear.
The Galaxy building sported a small restaurant, and a checkered past. Noted bands Trooper, Loverboy, Doug and The Slugs, and many others played the concrete roadhouse disco with something of a rowdy reputation over the years.
