Green candidate Kerry Davis supports greater local control of Cowichan's watersheds
Watershed governance, allowing Cowichanians control of the region's water supply, is his goal toward B.C.'s May 14 election.
"Water is our most precious resource, and we need to protect it, especially in watersheds like the one around Shawnigan Lake, that provide drinking water to residents," his release reads.
Davis praises local lake and river stewardship groups, and local First Nations working with municipal and provincial authorities — and raising concerns about South Island Aggregates' plan to reclaim its Stebbings Road quarry in South Cowichan by using five million tonnes of waste soils.
"Public opposition to (SIA's) plan has centred around the possible contamination of the area's drinking water."
He's also says he's "appalled at the extent of logging in Shawnigan's watershed."
Davis notes residents are frustrated by Victoria's actions about SIA's dirty-soil proposal, and inaction about storing river water behind Cowichan Lake's weir.
He wants improved river flows to dilute droughts, such as last fall when chinook salmon couldn't reach spawning grounds.
