Fires damage four homes in the past 24 hours
A mobile home on the Native reserve, and a blaze in three townhomes, kept North Cowichan firemen hopping in the past 24 hours.
South-end fire chief Rob MacDowell said a 4 p.m. fully-engulfed fire on Cowichan Tribes land off Boys Road destroyed a white abode on blocks, as a dozen members used three rigs to battle the blaze.
There were no injuries. MacDowell was unsure if the home was insured.
Fourteen hours later, fire damaged three attached townhomes in the Heron's Way complex.
That 2 a.m. blaze caused smoke damage to one unit, and burn damage to the other two, he said.
Again, no injuries resulted during the fire in what McDowell believed were insured units 19, 20, and 21.
The blaze burned the roof off the kitchen of one unit; another unit had its bedroom roof burned, McDowell said.
"There's some structure damage to repair," he said, figuring those fixes could take several months.
The fires were under a probe by Rob Clark, assistant to the fire commissioner.
