Physiotherapist facing sexual-assault charges back in Duncan court June 16

Court proceedings involving 23 sexual-assault charges against a valley physiotherapist are slated to resume in Duncan court June 16, registry staff said.

Action concerning Campbell Crichton, heard by Judge Keith Bracken, happened May 28 to 30, but was adjourned June 2 due to a defense-counsel family emergency, staff said.

June 16 will hear defence start severance applications in an effort to separate the charges. Those applications could take up to five days, with Crichton’s trial booked to begin June 23.

His trial could start sooner, depending how long it takes for Bracken to hear the severance applications, staff explained.

Various publication bans will prevent the identity of Crichton’s alleged victims from being revealed.

Crichton, now in his 50s, was initially charged in March 2011 with five counts of sexual assault for alleged offences that occurred while practising at Cowichan Physiotherapy.

Police said those alleged assaults involved five different female clients between 1996 and June 2009 ,and involve various forms of inappropriate touching during physiotherapy treatments.

Publicity from those charges led to subsequent charges.
