Seeing both sides of: Hospital’s fast-tracking effort

The case for

How many of us have not arrived at the Cowichan District Hospital ER in need of urgent attention and had to wait... and wait... and wait?

So adding what amounts to an urgent care component to CDH’s existing emergency care operation should be welcomed by everyone with open arms.

Thumbs up to Island Health for fronting the money for this to happen sooner, instead of later.

The case against

Yes, we’ve all spent painful hours waiting in the ER, and yes this program will help reduce that.

But it is a Band-Aid at best.

What the valley really needs is multiple 24-hour walk-in clinics around the community.

And why are fundraisers even necessary to make this fast-track happen? Shouldn’t it automatically be paid for by the taxpayer?
