Our take: Plexiglas a clear solution to bus driver attacks

Will it take the death of a Cowichan bus driver to force protective measures by the CVRD?

Let’s hope collective wisdom among our Cowichan Valley Regional District directors brings proactive sanity, through Plexiglas cages, to this potentially deadly situation.

Today’s feature about transit-driver safety seems to show a tragic accident waiting to happen.

CVRD directors need only listen to drivers’ experiences with violent riders.

No studies or consultants are needed here.

Those Plexiglas structures — designed for comfort, with driver and B.C. Transit input — would possibly cost far less than the recent $335,000 severance package paid to departed CVRD boss Warren Jones.

Then, given an unruly or angry fare, plexi protection would let drivers safely pull over, call police, and order passengers off the bus.

Not that our drivers want to be barricaded behind plexi.

They’d prefer direct rapport with their mostly courteous riders.

But that seems an increasingly dangerous occupational hazard given what they report as growing assault numbers.

One suspect, arrested in January by Shawnigan Lake RCMP, will face assault charges next month in Duncan court.

His traumatized, alleged victim is recovering on WCB, not driving a bus.

But until this sad situation is addressed squarely, and fairly soon, by our elected officials, more attacks seem imminent.

Public and worker safety is always a no-brainer.
