Mill Bay Marina another example of public input being ignored

Dear editor,

The homeowners who will lose their sea views and light for the vegetable garden are not the only ones disappointed in the outcome of the Mill Bay marina hearing. Handy Road and the nearby beach are a popular place for a stroll. Although the walkway and restoration of the marina are welcome, some spoke in favour of a pub/restaurant to attract both visiting boaters and locals. Other suggestions for a more imaginative development that would have seen the historic building on site renovated, with additional structures incorporating design elements similar to the original home, were completely ignored by Director Brian Harrison and his CVRD colleagues.

Instead of a development honouring local history and respecting the property values of residents, we are stuck with something that probably won’t go down in the history books.

Decisions such as these will only discourage citizens from public participation.  If the plan is already cast in stone prior to the rezoning hearing as Director Harrison’s comments imply, then what is the point of asking for public input?
