Kerry Park second in Racquet Club tournament

Kerry Park Midget AA Islanders played in the gold medal game at the 16-team Victoria Hockey Classic AAA tournament put on by the Racquet Club and came up just short.

Kerry Park AA tangled with Seafair AA of Richmond for the title and lost 4-1.

Kerry Park took too many penalties and didn’t play well enough together to get the win after such a strong tournament.

It was 1-0 for Seafair after the first period and 2-0 after the second.

Seafair made it 3-0 early in the third before Kerry Park finally got a late goal by Tyler Noble on assists from Jake Newman and Ian Haig. Seafair added another goal into the empty net with 11 seconds left, leaving Kerry Park with a well-deserved silver medal.

The tournament began for Kerry Park with a 7-3 victory over the Saanich Braves AAA at Pearkes Arena.

First goal of the game was scored by Justin Sokalski, with an assist to Richard Pringle. Brandon Nicholson scored with 14 seconds left in the first period, assisted by Sokalski.

In the second period, Kerry Park’s James Miller scored on an assist from Cole Peterson. The Braves rallied with a goal but Sokalski got that one back with help from Jeremy Achtzner and Peterson found the mark on an assist from Miller.

The Braves scored a second goal before the end of the period.

Saanich added another in the third, but the Islanders’ Newman scored on an assist to Noble. Goalie Dave McKinnon then made an awesome save and Sokalski finished the scoring with his hat trick, assisted by Haig.

Next up was a game at Panorama against Campbell River AAA that ended in a 6-2 win for Kerry Park.

Kerry Park’s first goal was scored by Haig, assisted by Nicholson and Taylor Filgate. The second goal went to Sokalski, with assists to Haig and Alex Wong, and the third to Nicholson on additional assists by Wong and Haig.

Filgate scored the fourth goal, with help from Sokalski and Haig. The final two goals were scored by Shaun Wheeler in the third period, with Sokalski and Newman assisting on both.

The third game of the tournament was a 3-1 win over Coquitlam AAA at the Racquet Club Arena.

Peterson scored the first goal assisted by Nicholson and Miller, Nicholson potted the second goal with help from Sokalski and Filgate, and the scoring concluded with Richard Pringle converting from the blue line on a power play after beautiful passing from Wong and Peterson.

That left Kerry Park first in its pool and set up a semifinal playoff against Juan de Fuca AAA. Kerry Park marched to the final with a 5-3 win.

Juan de Fuca scored first, but Kerry Park tied it on a beautiful unassisted goal by Sokalski. Juan de Fuca struck twice to go ahead 3-1 before Kerry Park closed the gap again in the first period on an Eric Faust unassisted marker.

Faust scored again to tie the game, with assists from Achtzner and Wheeler.

The winning goal came in the third period, as Sokalski went top shelf on a power play, assisted by Nicholson and Wong. The final goal came from Wong on a shot from the blue line, assisted by Miller.

Awesome goaltending by Wes Morris preserved the win.
