Sailors delight in popular Cowichan Bay Regatta

Expecting the unexpected goes with the territory for participants in the Cowichan Bay Sailing Association Regatta.

The sunshine that predominated was welcomed, but the wind conditions were of paramount importance, of course.

Saturday’s breezes got the weekend off to a strong start, but it didn’t stay that way.

“It was a weird year actually,’’ said Stuart Dahlgren of the UK Halsey organizing committee and also a regatta participant. “It kind of hazed over in the valley so we didn’t get out usual thermal.’’

The event attracted 99 boats, one of the highest totals in recent years. “It was a real strong showing, for sure,’’ said Dahlgren.

“I think it’s a successful formula,’’ he added. “We did something different this year. We had a separate start and finish line. That was popular.’’
