To serve and to volley
Sixteen teams are entered in the Brentwood College-Frances Kelsey Classic senior girls’ invitational tournament Friday and Saturday.
Eight teams are in pool play at Brentwood College. Brentwood is in Pool B with Vanier, Archbishop Carney and Ladysmith.
The eight other teams are playing at Frances Kelsey. The hosts are in Pool D with Lambrick Park, Parkland and Nanaimo District Secondary.
The championship round is at Brentwood and consolation play at Kelsey Saturday.
Coach Mark Jackson’s Kelsey squad tuned up for the event at the massive Vancouver Island University tournament in Nanaimo on the weekend before Thanksgiving.
“We’re having a little bit of a rebuilding year in a most definite way,’’ said Jackson.
Kelsey was in a tough pool at VIU and finished at the bottom of the four-team pack against powerful Ballenas and Vanier, and Claremont.
Moving on to the Bronze Tier playoff, “The girls were much stronger than the competition in that pool,’’ said Jackson.
Kelsey lost the first Bronze playoff match to John Barsby, but then defeated Ladysmith and Shawnigan Lake School.
At the end, “we were just showing signs of final breakthroughs on things,’’ said Jackson.
“First ball was going more consistently to setter and serving toughness had greatly improved.’’
Agnes Esser is the team’s big gun this season, with Darby Fischer and Lauren Barnes in support.
