Courtney Vanderstap

Duncan Skating Club members like Courtney Vanderstap not only love to skate themselves, they’re more than willing to lend a helping hand to the younger skaters.

Vanderstap, 15, a Grade 10 student at Cowichan Secondary School, started in the Canskate program at the age of eight and is now competing in Junior Bronze.

Vanderstap has been a program assistant for five years.

“She’s volunteering her time for the club twice a week,’’ said Duncan Skating Club coach Lorraine Francisty.

“They help our program run. Courtney’s a great role model, she does what she’s told to do and she sets up creative circuits for the kids.’’

“It’s a lot of fun,’’ said Vanderstap of helping the kids, especially in the changeover to a new Canskate system.

“It took a few practices to get us used to it, but it’s really good,’’ she said.

Vanderstap’s own skating included a lead role as Lightning McQueen in the club’s production of A Magical Kingdom On Ice.
