The Final Countdown
Olympians Kyle Hamilton and Hilary Stellingwerff did a lot of smiling at the Cowichan Valley Youth Athlete of the Year luncheon at Shawnigan Lake School.
Hamilton, a 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalist in rowing, and Stellingwerff, a 2012 London Olympics 16th-place finisher in the 1,500 metres, posed for photos with the top 20 valley youth athletes in attendance after speaking to them about their careers in athletics and the trials and tribulations of reaching the ultimate sporting stage.
The young athletes, encompassing numerous different sports, were left with many things to think about as they move along in their own sporting pursuits toward the end of high school and into university or other higher-level athletics.
